    Green Housekeeping

Wednesday, October 24, 2007, 06:00 PM MST [Green Living]

I read this in the AZ Republic and thought I'd pass it alon, naturally, I had to add my two cents as  well.

    Air Freshener:

Put cloves in a pan of water and simmer on the stove.  A couple of drops of essential oil in a diffuser can work wonders.  Experiment to find the right blend for you.

    Keep Kitchen Drains Clear:

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain then (carefully so not to completely wash away the baking soda) pour 1 cup of white vinegar in after it.  Let it sit for 10 minutes then pour at least a half gallon of boiling water down the drain.  I've done this on several occasions and it works like a dream.  I also send a few lemon slices through the garbage disposal after the drain's been cleared--makes a wonderful, clean scent

    Laundry:

Launder clothes in cold water.  It can save $60. a year.  90% of the energy goes to heating the water and 10% to the washer motor.  Washing only full loads can save up to 3,400 gallons a year!  Use detergents that are natural and phosphate free.

    Making Your Bed:

Well, the kids will like this one even if you don't-Leave the bed sheets and comforter rumpled.  About 1.5 million dust mites, those allergy-triggering critters, reside in our beds and feed on what we leave behind:  Skin cells and moisture.  Not making the bed allows the moisture to dissipate, thus killing the mites. You can also compromise by pulling the sheets back fully for a few hours before making your bed--just let it air out a while.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Bringht Blessings

Singing the Praises of Hydrogen Peroxide

Tuesday, July 10, 2007, 03:53 PM MST [Green Living]

This is an email that my cousin sent me.  I haven't tried all of them but many of them do work.  As much as I love bleach, hydrogen peroxide is much easier on our planet.  My family and I are really trying to cut back on energy and water consumption.  We've up-graded our air conditioner and just bought a new washer and dryer.  The washer uses 65% less water than the old one!  It's been an expensive project, but in the long run will help us and Lady Gaia.

     1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and
hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out.  No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without
expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.

    2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs.

    3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or  spray it on the counters.

    4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

    5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of
peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

    6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes
several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with
any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide.

    7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep
it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like
bleach or most other disinfectants will.

    8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture
whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill
the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue.

    9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away,
put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes
several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.

    10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50
solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not
have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more
natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde.
It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change.

    11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus,
    or other skin infections.

    12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of
whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour
it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and
rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

    13. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors. There is no smearing, which is why
I love it so much for this.

I could go on and on. It is a little brown bottle no home should be
without! With prices of most necessities rising, I'm glad there's a way
to save tons of money in such a simple, healthy manner!

This information really helped me out.  I hope it'll do the same for you.
